The National Art Honor Society (NAHS) is designed specifically for high school students in grades 9-12. In 1978, the National Art Education Association began the National Art Honor Society program to inspire and recognize students who have shown an outstanding ability and interest in art. The NAHS strives to aid members in attaining the highest standards in art scholarship, character, and service, and to bring art education to the attention of the school and community. Opportunities for national recognition, scholarships, and connectivity to 46,000+ outstanding art students are available to members of NAHS/NJAHS.
The NAHS is open to students who have completed at least one semester of Art 1. Students must go thru a recommendation process before being accepted into the society. Members will participate in a number of service projects and experience art firsthand through school field trips to art galleries, open studio time and by helping produce the Arlington High School Annual Art Show and Competition.
The NAHS will continue our eight year tradition of working with “The Memory Project.” The Memory Project is a unique initiative in which art students create portraits for children and teens around the world who have been neglected, orphaned, or disadvantaged. Given that kids in such situations tend to have few personal keepsakes, we're aiming to provide them with special memories that capture a piece of their childhood. As much as possible, we also want to help the kids see themselves as works of art. To do this, art students receive photos of kids on our waiting list and then work in any medium to create the portraits (drawing, painting, digital art, collage, etc). Next, we deliver the portraits to the kids as gifts. We also take photos of the kids holding the portraits so the art students can see the delivery in action.
The society has worked to help raise awareness of Autism during the month of April by creating Autism Awareness Bracelets that were sold to students and teachers with proceeds going to “Autism Speaks.” Other initiatives included school beautification with the goal being to create at least one large scale mural per year to install in the hallways of Arlington High School.
